In "The Necklace", the necklace acts as a symbol. It represents the false identity of Mathilde when she dresses up beautifully and pretends she's as rich as the other ladies at the party. Just like the necklace, she is not real. And when she loses the necklace, it symbolizes that Mathilde also loses anything that might suggest she's rich. She becomes extremely poor to pay the price of the new and real diamond necklace.
